Sandi Owens

Sandi Owens

Assistive Technology Instructor

I have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, which was obtained from Methodist University. As a person with low vision, I strive to accomplish more than most. I have been a middle school math teacher for ten years. In 2016. I was awarded teacher of the year at East Hoke Middle School in Raeford, North Carolina. In 2017, I made the decision to teach abroad, in Kuwait, on a two-year contract. This was a great opportunity and learning experience. Although my vision has progressively decreased, I am still driven. As an
active graduate student at North Carolina Central University, I am focused on becoming a Teacher of Students who Are Visually Impaired and Blind, as well as a Certified Instructor of Assistive Technology.

The skills and knowledge obtained during these two master’s programs and volunteering as an Assistive Technology Instructor at the Vision Resource Center led me to establish my own business (Making It Visible, LLC) as an independent contractor, providing services and in-services as an Assistive Technology Instructor/Trainer/Consultant. My qualifications, determination, and perseverance contribute to my leadership role as the President of the North Carolina Council of the Blind. With these certifications and achievements, I take pride in advocating and providing adequate services and resources to the visually impaired community.
